Malu Reigal
Pan, pijo y habas 2nd Winner of the 2025 Open Call
“Pan, pijo y habas” is a project by Malu Reigal that emerges from her own family background and explores relationships of affection within a radically masculinized peripheral context, where the breeding and training of competition pigeons take place.
Her connection to this practice stems from a tradition started by her grandfather and now continued by her uncle. He is the only man among five siblings and, in the family home, takes care of her grandmother, the pigeons, the vegetable garden, and the roses planted by his father. These relationships of care are learned processes that, for men, are shaped by an environment where inherited rituals and values have defined a homogeneous collective identity.
The project seeks to examine and measure the tensions between choice and duty, exploring the blurred lines that separate caring from breeding, love from possession, inheritance from assumption. It raises a reflection on relationships: What is the connection between men and their environment, their roots, the birds, and themselves?
