Lluís Estopiñan
Meantime
In the Meantime series, Lluís Estopiñan connects two moments experienced in the same space. An old, anonymous negative serves as the base for emulsifying in cyanotype and reproducing, through contact printing, the image of another negative that interacts and dialogues with the first.
In this way, he obtains a positive image on a negative, meaning the final composition is never fully visible in positive.
By applying tonal inversion, the roles are reversed, but one of the images always remains in negative, as if representing parallel worlds that can only be sensed.
This creates a certain sense of magic, forcing the viewer to decode part of the image and search for connections between the two superimposed photographs.
There is also a play of presences reminiscent of 19th-century photographic montages, which aimed to convince viewers of spiritual apparitions—so-called ectoplasms—that impressed the gullible by displaying ghostly, ethereal forms allegedly invisible to the naked eye but captured through photography.
It was believed to be a new function of photography: making the unseen visible.
To see things never thought possible—like the people coexisting in the same space-time in Meantime.
