Lithprinting Workshop

Wednesday, May 21

This workshop will combine theory and practice, exploring the magic of lith printing with different types of paper and developer dilutions. You will learn about the variables that influence contrast and color in prints, experiencing firsthand how adjustments and techniques affect the final results.

Topics we will cover:
Theoretical introduction to lith printing, with references to specialized literature and great masters of this technique.
Infectious development, a fundamental aspect of lith printing that becomes addictive for those who try it.
Process variables: contrast, color, grain.
How to influence these variables: print exposure, developer dilution (and additives), developer temperature.
Suitable papers for lith printing.
Ideal characteristics of a negative for this technique.
And plenty of hands-on practice: we will learn by printing and experimenting!

Workshop with Oliver Pera

He has worked for over 15 years as an instructor in a public laboratory in Nuremberg, Germany. Together with some friends, he recently founded a non-profit organization (Entwicklungsprozess e. V.) and a laboratory (@studio95nbg) to create a collaborative photographic space.

A professional with over 10 years of experience in lith printing, he learned the fundamentals from Wolfgang Moersch in 2012. He lives and works in Nuremberg, Germany.

Requirements

Prior Knowledge:
Basic experience in black and white darkroom work is required, as well as an understanding of how to manage contrast in both negatives and prints.

Materials to Bring:
A selection of black and white negatives, preferably with low to normal density (those that appear lighter on a light table), as the lith technique enhances highlights and deepens shadows. It is recommended to bring a variety of negatives to choose from, including both easier and more challenging options.

Optional: If you prefer to take your wet prints with you instead of leaving them to dry in the lab (especially fiber-based papers, which take longer to dry), bring a secure carrier for transportation.
