Lith printing is a black-and-white chemical printing technique in which a photographic print is developed using a highly diluted and exhausted lith developer. Unlike conventional processing, this method produces images with a highly distinctive aesthetic that can never be reproduced in exactly the same way.
This workshop will combine theory and practice, exploring the magic of lith printing with different types of paper and developer dilutions. You will learn about the variables that influence the contrast and colour of the prints, experimenting first-hand with how different adjustments and techniques affect the final results.

Important: Lith printing requires time and patience, so we will take the time needed to achieve the best possible results.
Requirements
Previous knowledge: Basic experience working in a black-and-white photographic darkroom is required, as well as an understanding of how to control contrast in both negatives and prints.
Materials to bring: A selection of black-and-white negatives, preferably with low to normal density (those that appear lighter on a light table), as the lith technique can enhance highlights and deepen shadows. We recommend bringing a variety of negatives so you can choose between easier and more complex options.
Optional: If you would like to take the prints home while they are still wet instead of leaving them to dry in the darkroom—especially fibre-based papers, which take longer to dry—please bring a suitable protective support for transporting them safely.
Oliver Pera has worked for more than 15 years as an instructor at a public laboratory in Nuremberg, Germany. Together with several friends, he founded a non-profit organisation (“Entwicklungsprozess e. V.”) and a laboratory (@studio95nbg) to provide a collaborative space for photographic work.
He is a professional with more than 10 years of experience in lith printing. He learned the fundamentals from Wolfgang Moersch in 2012. He lives and works in Nuremberg, Germany.
