Escape velocity is the minimum speed required for an object to break free from the gravitational pull of an astronomical body and continue moving without any further propulsive effort: the physical concept that gives its name and meaning to the entire project.
Inspired by the discovery of an astronomy book from the 1960s, this work examines a photographic archive in search of beings and objects pursuing their own freedom, understood as the capacity for decision-making.
The project moves away from linear narrative and jumps between events from millions of years ago and others yet to come, between the universe and home, towards the only place where we can be truly free: the present, the ultimate destination of every escape.
We escape from a wound, from guilt or from a memory. We escape from an idea, from a destiny and from expectations.
We escape from the illusion of time to head towards the present, the only place where we can aspire to be truly free.
Alex Llovet (Barcelona, 1974) is a photographer, director and editor, with a background in the Humanities, Film and Photography.
His work explores the boundaries between reality and fiction through poetic and conceptual projects that transform the everyday and challenge our perception of images.
The author of eight photobooks and a novel, in 2018 he co-founded Ediciones Posibles, an independent publishing house whose work has received various national and international accolades.
