A mother of six, the author was going through a difficult time in her personal life when she began walking – in the afternoons and at the first light of dawn – towards a river in the south of France, seeking a quiet escape from that period.
What began as a ritual of wandering and taking photographs without any particular aim soon turned into a kind of visual diary: a meditation on healing and transformation.
The water, ever-shifting and unpredictable, reflects her own emotional state, whilst the families and animals she encountered on the riverbanks (jumping, splashing, climbing trees) embody the warmth and sense of belonging she was seeking, with nature thus becoming a refuge and an escape.
Marjolein Martinot (Netherlands) is a photographer based in France who, from a very young age, felt drawn to photography and has continued to use and explore this medium throughout her life, whilst raising a family.
Her photography has a poetic quality, whilst striving to remain authentic and sincere.
Everyday life, family, friends, as well as the places and things that move her, are recurring themes that intertwine in many of her photographs.
