Collage allows us to imagine history beyond the rigidity imposed on it by photography; it is a way of escaping the predetermined fate that the archive assigns to each face.
Each figure is presented with a second layer that defines it just as much as the original face, framed within its era and, at the same time, endowed with a dynamic, spontaneous and mischievous personality.
The starting point is always the period photograph: anonymous portraits that are reinterpreted with humour and freedom, whilst the captions (which are, in this case, known) underpin the interplay between archive and fiction.
The project frees the images from the rigidity of the fixed narrative and opens up new possibilities for identity, play and interpretation, far removed from the script that history had imposed upon them.
Rita Chaos (Terrassa, 2001) creates collages using discarded images and playing cards, constructing compositions in which playfulness, irony and mischief are central.
She describes herself as a romantic manipulator of vintage photographic aesthetics and transforms her lack of knowledge of the rules of the game into creative freedom.
Since 2019, she has been designing her own visual playing field, abandoning pre-established rules to play with and rework the materials until she finds new combinations.
54 Jokers, her first exhibition, was presented in 2024 at Sala Muncunill and La Casa Elizalde.
