Born in Omdurman in 1995, the author offers a first-hand account of the devastation caused by the war that broke out in Sudan in April 2023, focusing on the humanitarian impact and the experiences of loss and displacement: forced flight as the only option for survival.
This is not a distant account: his own family has remained in Khartoum since the conflict began, and this personal connection runs throughout the work.
The project also gathers the testimonies of those who have sought refuge in neighbouring countries, intertwining their personal story with that of other displaced families, who have fled the same horror via different routes.
The memories and the war remain present even in dreams, long after they have managed to escape.
Salih Basheer (Sudan, 1995) moved to Egypt, where he studied Geography at Cairo University and began to teach himself photography.
He later studied photojournalism in Denmark. In 2021, he was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Student Grant and the Everyday Projects Grant for his project 22 Days in Between.
The photobook, published in 2023 and considered the first by a Sudanese photographer, received the Photo-Text Book Award at Les Rencontres d'Arles.
In 2024, he was nominated to Magnum Photos.
