The sea serves as a threshold in this essay on youth, identity and landscape in the context of migration.
Developed over the long term with a group of young people in Barcelona and Morocco, it explores their connection with water as a space of transit, desire and belonging – the physical boundary separating two shores and two ways of life.
The images combine everyday scenes with collaboratively constructed portraits, centred on the shared gesture of jumping into the water (fear, desire and liberation concentrated in a single moment), the most literal escape possible: the body launching itself towards another place.
That leap transforms the individual experience into an act of community and play, and into a concrete way of crossing the boundary between what is left behind and what is sought.
Jose Lorrüe (Barcelona, 1991), who studied Communication Sciences and holds a Master’s degree in photography, is a visual artist specialising in auteur documentary.
His work, with a humanistic approach, reflects on the medium of photography and the tensions between reality and fiction.
Through photography and video, he constructs narratives that explore power dynamics, identity and the experiences of different communities.
