Kallitipias workshop with Digital Negative

Thursday, May 22 and Friday, May 23

The workshop on Kallitipias and Digital Negatives focuses on learning this contact printing technique, based on iron and silver salts, developed in 1889 by Scottish chemist and photographer W.W.J. Nicols.

This technique is distinguished by its wide tonal range and the ability to capture details in shadow areas. A key aspect of the workshop is the calibration of digital negatives, necessary to achieve copies with historical processes that faithfully correspond to the original digital image. Since the tone curve of these processes is not linear, each negative must be adjusted to the specific process.

Workshop content:

History and fundamentals of kallitipia; Types of paper (gelatin, watercolor, etc.); Preparation of chemicals and negatives; Contrast and exposure control; Types of developers and toning (gold, selenium, platinum, double toning); Fixing, clearing, and photo review.

Workshop with Joaquín Paredes

Joaquín Paredes is a photographer specialized in historical processes. He approaches his personal projects through experimentation with 19th-century techniques, such as wet collodion or daguerreotypes, to address contemporary themes and advocate for the use of these processes in current photography. He has exhibited his work at national and international festivals and magazines, such as the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, Cáceres de Foto, Revela’t, Segovia Foto, L’oeil de la Photographie… Additionally, he combines his projects with teaching at institutions like the IPCE, CDIS, ICCD (Italy), the San Telmo Museum, and the Academy of Spain in Rome.
