Sin Esquina                         3rd Winner of Open Call 2025

Herbert Mulanovich documents in Sin Esquina the “street” dogs of Peru, popularly known as “chuscos”, which are the result of crossbreeding without human intervention.

These animals, an essential part of both urban and rural culture in several Latin American countries, stand out for their unique character and remarkable ability to adapt to different environments. Unlike purebred dogs, “chuscos” do not conform to a specific physical standard, resulting in a wide variety of sizes, coats, and features.

Known for their resilience and vitality, many of these dogs have grown up in harsh conditions, developing a strong survival instinct. In urban areas, especially in cities like Lima, it is common to see them roaming the streets, facing the daily challenges of city life.

The images of “chuscos” confront us with an uncomfortable truth: even in the animal world, discrimination based on appearance exists, and these dogs are no exception, despite being known as “man’s best friend.” Often marginalized for not fitting into conventional beauty standards, “chuscos” become the protagonists of this artistic project.

Each photograph highlights their uniqueness, showing how their so-called “imperfection” is, in reality, a true and authentic form of beauty.
