Dmytro Kupriyan

The art of wars or Rules of caring for a rifle

Dmytro Kupriyan explores the war in Ukraine from two perspectives in his project The Art of Wars or Rules of Caring for a Rifle.

On one hand, he draws inspiration from Sun Tzu’s The Art of War to illustrate how conflicts follow millennia-old patterns of tactics and strategy. On the other, he focuses on the daily routines of soldiers, on those everyday gestures that, through repetition, become their essential tools for survival and combat: cleaning weapons, training, cooking…

Through photographic triptychs, the project brings us closer to these often invisible moments, revealing the discipline and humanity behind warfare. An intimate and profound look into the reality of a war that still endures.

Dmytro Kupriyan (Kíiv, Ucraïna)

Dmytro Kupriyan began his career in photojournalism before focusing on projects about violence and its consequences. He has documented police brutality in Ukraine (TORTURED) and the war in his country (Fragments of War, Banality of Aggression, WHEN THE WAR IS OVER).

Beyond his work on the conflict, Kupriyan has explored Ukrainian historical navigation with the traditional chaika SPAS and has developed projects on landscape and human identity, such as HOME/Дім and HOMO/Людина.

Since the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, he has been part of the Ukrainian Army and continues to document the war from within.
