"The photography lovers"

Great non-professional authors from the daguerreotype

An illustrated dialogue with images by Julián Ochoa and Rafa Badia

We have an official history of photography, with hundreds of names of professionals, whether they are authors of the documentary field, creation or images for scientific purposes. Also, another that runs in parallel, that of the "amateurs", lovers of photography who did not want, knew or could make it a job with which to earn a living.

Since 1839, the year of the official presentation of the photographic medium, hundreds of men and women, moved by a love of cameras and film, have substantially enriched the expressive possibilities of the photochemical image. Some of them, such as Julia Margaret Cameron, Jacques Henri-Lartigue, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Vivian Maier, Joan Colom or Mike Brodie have become, each in their own way, important references in the 21st century. There are also the "pro" who developed personal projects, such as Saul Leiter or Araki, whose images of the private sphere have been made public.

The importance, value and influence of the image created by those who considered themselves mere fans can be debated. Even more so at a time when social networks are the terrain where professional and amateur jobs are mixed and confused; and in which it is proceeding to a forced rescue of files of high quality negatives, treasures of authors until now completely unknown.
