Las Olas no Preguntan, by Santos Montes

Curated by Natasha Christia

An assemblage of photographs of kids swimming and playing in the puddles under the sun suggests a latent drama.

In “Las olas no preguntan” Santos Montes proceeds in an arduous work of obscuring a series of photographs that were originally taken in La Playa de las Catedrales de Lugo under full sunlight during the August months of 2008-2015.

Light-hearted moments of family leisure are transformed as to express silenced experiences that permeate and colour the author’s own biography: a childhood trauma resulting from the loss of a prematurely deceased father, the fragility and volatility of life, the fading of memories...

A recognized fan of portraiture, he is considered someone who knows better than anyone how to immortalise sensations, feelings and thoughts hidden under the gaze of his subjects.
