The Muséu d'Asturies Photo Library (Xixón / Gijón) holds a Post-Mortem collection, dedicated to collecting samples of post-mortem photography.
Although this type of images seems more typical of the Anglo-Saxon world, the Photo Library shows how this genre reached a great development in Spain, among all social classes until the 1960s.
The photographing of the deceased started soon after the birth of photography, consisting in making a portrait of the dead, alone or accompanied by their family or friends. This kind of photography is not considered morbid according to a romantic vision of life and death.
This is the photographic collection from files and family collections made by Asturians or foreigners who had a relationship with Asturias.
