OBSCURA is a photo book of contemporary analogue pinhole photography, showcasing works of the international pinhole photo community.
At a time when almost every detail of photography is controllable, documentable and thus, repeatable, when our own views on reality are being restricted by the flood of digital imagery, the pinhole camera represents an alternative.
Lensless photography is always subject to chance, the uncontrollable combination of material, light, time, perspective and dynamics.
A pinhole photograph shows the unseen, and offers an unusual, absorbing, and at times unsettling aesthetic experience. It is less documentation but leaves room for a subjective point of view, and often teaches us to recalibrate our own view on our personal reality.
“OBSCURA: 121 Blicke – 121 views” is a community project on contemporary pinhole photography. The book consists of 11 chapters that, accompanied by poetic verses, spin the red thread through the book. The worldwide photo community was invited to use them as an “echo chamber” for their photographic associations, to explore the possibilities of the pinhole camera, and contribute their subjective views to OBSCURA.
An international jury including actress Nora Tschirner and designer Jussi Ängeslevä selected the strongest 121 photographs. These 121 views tell OBSCURA’s multifaceted, personal stories. The “Obscura Book” exhibition shows a selection of more than 60 of the 121 photos that make up the book, a good example of the work submitted by 91 photographers from around the world.
